thedesignzoo: 11. Gran Fury is an art collective and activism group which formed in 1988. The group takes their name from the Plymouth Gran Fury, the car used by the NYPD for police cars. They worked at expressing their anger and spreading the message of Aids awareness during the 1980’s pandemic, working alongside ACT UP (Aids Coalition to Unleash Power).  One of their main objectives was to push political leaders to talk about Aids in a more frank and open way, educating the public on safe sex and clean needles rather than fear tactics. Jamie XX’s (of the band of The XX and also a solo performer) debut album cover uses a similar aesthetic and use of minimalist shape, possibly as paying homage to the Silence = Death logo created by the group (might sound like I’m clutching at straws there but they’re a very moody and art concious band in the Joy Division mould and have even designed some of their own album artwork).
